Lela Rose Forecasts Ladylike Looks For Fall

Lauren David Peden
February 05th, 2006 @ 10:33 AM - New York

Lela Rose kicked off her Fall 2006 presentation yesterday at the Kemble Interiors space on Fifth Avenue by offering guests flutes of bubbly and French-style macaroons made by a pastry chef pal, which the designer claimed were "better than Laduree." While they were delish, FWD didn't think the airy treats were quite on par with their French counterparts.

Rose's own confections, however, would certainly give any Parisian couturier a run for their money. While her "girls" don't plan to do much working this fall, judging by the clothes she presented - which included nary one day look among a dozen exceptionally elegant outfits - they will most certainly be beautifully turned out for any and all after-dark events, from dinner at Philippe to cocktails at Bette to openings at the Met or Lincoln Center.

Among the special occasion ensembles, worn by comely young models sporting slightly disheveled updos and natural makeup, were ivory chiffon tops and dresses bearing built-in bejeweled collars (a Rose signature), a stunning silk gazar polka dot dress - also in ivory - with charcoal velvet waist sash and a face-framing ruffle that stood high in the front before plunging low to encircle the deeply scooped back.

An olive crinkle scoopneck minidress with puffy lampshade sleeves worn with a Victorian collared white Dickie underneath was another lovely look, as were a strapless brown dress with elaborate silver embroidery at the bodice and hem, a flower-print dress encased in silk tulle and caught at the waist with a Cameo pinned velvet sash and - to wear over them - an ivory wool jacquard-print coat with high funnel neck, pretty puffed bracelet length sleeves (perfect for showing off those opera gloves) and brushed silver ball buttons. (These brushed silver buttons also appeared on the white Dickie, on the jacket of a navy skirt suit, and on a printed chiffon halter blouse.)

"I'm not doing this again," Rose confided to FWD while greeting friends and colleagues. "It's too much work! Next time, we're going back to the Tents."

At that moment, her 5-year-old son, Grey ("You can see that his father dressed him this morning," Rose joked of her offspring's casual striped t-shirt and jeans), bounded up to his elegantly attired mother, grabbed her by the arm and commanded "Follow me, momma! Follow me!" then pulled her across the room, where she was quickly surrounded by more well-wishers.
