Tod’s Names Lam Creative Director
Massimo O'Neil
December 01st, 2006 @ 12:49 AM
The Lam moves up in Milan.
Tod's has appointed Derek Lam to be its Creative Director, making him the first person to hold this position for the booming Italian label.
Calling the nomination "a synergy between the best in Italian luxury and the excitement of one of the most important designers of his time," Tod's predicted the young American designer would dynamically grow the brand.
Lam's first collection will be autumn/winter 2007/2008 season, first hitting boutique shelves in July 2007.
"There's a sense of unpretentious casualness and Italian chic to Tod's, which I love. So I will be working with that particular chic urbane sensibility in mind," said the critically acclaimed Lam in a press release.
Designer Derek had already been collaborating with Tod's for a couple of seasons. The Milan-based label stressed that Lam will continue to design contemporary ready-to-wear for Tod's, as well as a capsule collection of bags and shoes.
Tod's has used various contemporary talents to bolster its image and diversify its design base. The label even teamed up with fashion illustrator and Vanity fashion director Michael Roberts using his pretty patterns.
Tod's principal owner Diego Della Valle called Lam "one of the most important and exciting design talents."
"His work over the past few seasons has demonstrated a great understanding of Tod's as a brand, and we look forward to his contributions to the continued and growing success of the brand," said Della Valle.
Added Lam: "Tod's is about contemporary elegance, imbued with amazing luxury and craftsmanship. I plan to continue to add my sense of fashion, maintaining Tod's iconic DNA and heritage."
