Tacita Dean Wins Hugo Boss Prize 2006
November 15th, 2006 @ 4:04 PM - New York
Artist Tacita Dean took home the $50,000 Hugo Boss Prize 2006 on Tuesday, November 14th after she was pronounced the winner at a party to honor six finalists at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
Dean, born in Canterbury, England and formally trained as a painter, is internationally known for her haunting and imaginative 16mm films. She was also nominated for the Turner Prize in 1998.
The other finalists this year included collaborative duo Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, John Bock, Damian Ortega, Aida Ruilova and Tino Sehgal.
At the party to celebrate the artists, fashion, entertainment, literary and art luminaries like Derek Lam, Kai Kuhne, Peter Som, Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Hopper, Damien Loeb, Jay McInerney, Amy Sacco, Hope Atherton, Olivia Chantecaille, Irina Pantaeva and Anthony Haden Guest mingled on the famous ramps and main floor of the Frank Gehry-designed museum.
As the midnight hour approached, the museum turned into a makeshift nightclub with Patrick McMullan and Merlin Bronques of Last Night's Party snapping photos of the revelers and guests who had been enjoying ample quantities of champagne and the fashion party food du jour, comfort food in all its forms including mini hamburgers, fois gras with mango slices, mini cakes with “Hugo Boss” written in frosting and even cannoli.
Established in 1996, the Hugo Boss Prize for contemporary art is awarded by an international committee of curators, critics and collectors. Previous winners have included Matthew Barney (1996), Douglas Gordon (1998), Marjetica Potrc (2000), Pierre Huyghe (2002) and Rirkrit Tiravanija (2004).
