Lucy Liu and Derek Lam Unveil Tod’s Latest Looks

Damp, chilly weather did little to dissuade fashion’s faithful from stopping by Tod’s Madison Avenue flagship store for afternoon tea on Tuesday, October 17th, to see the new collections designed by Derek Lam and Lucy Liu.
Sipping flutes of champagne and dainty cups of tea, guests Rachel Roy, Kelly Bensimon, Olivia Chantecaille, Sarah Wynter, Jessica Seinfeld, Mary Alice Stephenson and Hilary and Bryant Gumbel turned out to get a sneak peek at the limited edition snakeskin-trimmed metallic leather handbag Liu designed for Tod’s to benefit UNICEF.
"[Tod’s] approached me about doing this after they came to an art show I did about a month ago [for] UNICEF, because they wanted to work with a charity, so it was perfect," said Liu, UNICEF's 2006 Ambassador, who was wearing a Tod's by Derek Lam polo dress and carrying the bag she designed, which is dubbed "Marlene" and retails for $1600, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the U.S. Funds for UNICEF.
"They let us do whatever we wanted, and I think it came out great!" she added, swinging the bag for emphasis as photographers documented her every move. "We picked out the colors - they’re [muted] for fall and metallic - and the strap goes in so it can be used as an evening clutch."
Clearly Liu had a hit on her hands: Nine of the 15 bags on display sold during the two-hour event.
Lam, meanwhile, was nearby fielding congratulations for his latest Tod’s offerings, a capsule collection dubbed "Be There In Five," with chic, toss-them-on-and-go items such as a cashmere and leather cardigan, an elegant leather trench, a pleated chiffon skirt and several sporty-sophisticated jackets.
"The great thing about working with Tod’s is that isn’t about a quota or a budget, it’s really about what they love," said Lam. "There’s not a fixed number - we did nine pieces for fall and 15 for next spring - but it’s about keeping it special."
To this end, the designer focused on updating classic items, like the traditional toggle coat, by giving it luxe tweaks such as leather snap-tab closures and a cool swing shape.
"I always think of my own collection as [representing] New York and the New York lifestyle, and with Tod’s it’s the same thing, but from an Italian point of view," Lam added. "I think Italy is sleek, sporty but sexy and has that continental flair, and New York is a little bit more experimental with interesting mixes; kind of stirring the pot. So it’s taking what I believe is the best of both worlds and interpreting it into clothing."
This sexy-sleek element is just one of the reasons Sheryl Crow is such "a big fan" of Tod’s accessories.
"I carry their bags a lot, and think that they’re always beautiful and classic," she said while checking out a shoe display. "I just think they always look good, and they wear so well. I find I always wind up going back to my same Tod's bags."
So does she own any of the Tod’s by Derek Lam pieces?
"No, but I’m actually getting ready to try on a cape, which I hope to purchase before I leave today," said Crow before slipping into the dressing room to try on some merch.
Ten minutes later, Crow was the proud owner of a new cape, which she happily shrugged on before heading out to brave the elements.
