Altuzarra, Peter Hidalgo Tie as Top Women's Designers at Rising Star Awards
Renata Espinosa
January 26th, 2010 @ 12:23 AM - New York
Tomorrow’s emerging design talents and entrepreneurs were announced at the 13th annual Rising Star Awards on Friday, Jan. 22, sponsored by Fashion Group International, the global non-profit organization composed of members fashion and design-related industries.
Before the winners were announced, Nina Garcia, “Project Runway” judge and fashion director of Marie Claire, gave the keynote address to the New York audience at the ceremony.
“Everybody has a breakthrough moment in fashion,” said Garcia, who recounted her first job in fashion as an intern at Perry Ellis when then-head designer Marc Jacobs produced his infamous grunge collection that went on to make fashion history. “I am still that wide-eyed girl when I watch your designs come down the runway. It is still awe-inspiring.”
Garcia encouraged the nominees to think about their own breakthrough moments and how they want to be remembered.
“How will you leave your mark? What is your legend?” she said. “You have to know as an artist who you are and what you stand for. Don’t try to be the next Marc Jacobs. Be yourself. If they had tried to be who came before them, you wouldn’t know their names right now. Be bold. Break some rules. Challenge and astonish us.”
In the fashion categories, Rising Star winners included Amanda Pearl Brotman in accessories, for her collection Amanda Pearl, inspired by jewels, modern art and vintage travel posters; in fine jewelry, Monica Rich Kosann; in retail, Edward Chai and Paul Birardi of Odin New York, in men’s apparel, Anthony Keegan and Richard Christiansen of Commonwealth Utilities and in women’s apparel, there was a tie between Joseph Altuzarra and Peter Hidalgo.
“It’s wonderful just to have this community, it’s very helpful,” said Altuzarra after he accepted his award.
Other winners included interior designer Dror Benshetrit in home/interior design, Juliette Karagueuzoglou of International Flavors and Fragrances in corporate beauty/fragrance and Janet League-Katzin of Sphatika International in beauty/fragrance entrepreneur.
