Alexander McQueen Launches Lower Priced McQ Line

British designer Alexander McQueen launched his new diffusion line, dubbed McQ, at the Soho boutique, Eva, on Thursday, July 27th.

Although McQueen himself was not hand, guests including Gen Art Fashion Director Mary Gehlhar and "Project Runway" star Tim Gunn stopped by to get a sneak peek at the his-and-hers collection, which features fair isle knit sweaters, striped jersey tops and dresses, fuzzy cropped cardigans, plaid bustiers, leather pants and coats and lots of t-shirts and denim.

"You could easily see these clothes walking down the street," Tim Gunn said while flipping through the McQ look book, a "catalog" of sorts, featuring all the garments shot on models with highly stylized 1950s pompadours and dramatic black eyeliner.

The McQ line will retail for $120 to $5,000 when it hits boutiques and department stores this month, with most items averaging $300 to $500, and reflects the way the designer himself dresses every day, according to a McQ sales rep.

The debut collection was inspired by rockabilly and the American Depression and Dustbowl era, which explained the many skull motifs, gingham checks and lacy knit skirts. The line also featured cozy patterned leggings and an ice gray wool coat-cape with removable raccoon fur collar and chunky brown leather belt, which will retail for $1,000 - less than the cost of a simple jersey dress or raffia handbag from McQueen's signature Fall 2006 collection.
