Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta Tie for Womenswear Designer of the Year
Renata Espinosa
June 05th, 2007 @ 4:13 PM - New York
Sorry, Marc – it was tie, and not with you. Much to the surprise of everyone Monday night, there were two winners of the CFDA's womenswear designer of the year award: Fashion veteran Oscar de la Renta and fashion darlings Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, beating out Marc Jacobs, the third nominee in the category.
Ralph Lauren, recipient of the American Fashion Legend award, nabbed menswear designer of the year.
"I believe that we have a consciousness as Americans to honor who we are," said Oprah Winfrey, who presented Lauren with his Legend award. “He represents an icon in the definition of the word, having symbolized what is possible, what is meaningful - sometimes fashion can be kind of frivolous."
Derek Lam, who also designs for Tod's in addition to his own label, won accessory designer of the year.
The CFDA Awards, American fashion's biggest event of the year, honors both design heavyweights and its rising stars. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the CFDA festivities kicked off on Sunday night at an intimate dinner hosted by Nadja Swarovski and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen at Top of the Rock.
The Olsen twins, designers themselves, presented the Swarvoski awards for up-and-coming young talent in womenswear, menswear and accessory design. Philip Lim took home the award for womenswear, while David Neville and Marcus Wainwright of Rag & Bone snagged the menswear award. A tearful, pregnant Jessie Randall of Loeffler Randall accepted the accessories award.
Though tropical storm Barry threatened to put a damper on the awards gala held in New York, by the time Diane von Furstenberg – CFDA president and the first guest to hit the carpet stretched out along the grand steps of the New York Public Library - the rain had stopped and the air was balmy, much to the relief of the stylish guests with expensive shoes, dresses and accessories to look after, like former supermodel Iman.
With arm accessory and husband David Bowie at her side, Iman wore a red Donna Karan gown paired with an elaborate breastplate-like necklace by Robert Lee Morris, a longtime friend of Iman and collaborator with Karan. Morris received the Lifetime Achievement award from the CFDA.
Though Steven Cox and Daniel Silver of Duckie Brown didn't win the menswear designer of the year award this time around, they took the prize for best red carpet entrance, pulling up in a chauffeured Dodge Dart with their adorable dog riding shotgun.
Others honored by the CFDA Monday included photographer Patrick Demarchelier, Washington Post fashion journalist Robin Givhan and U2's Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, who founded eco-conscious fashion company Edun with Rogan Gregory.
