Kai Kuhne on Folding Fashion
Lindsay Sammon
September 11th, 2006 @ 12:02 AM - New York
Since launching Myself, former As Four designer Kai Kuhne has established a loyal following of his own, and they arrived in droves on Sunday, September 10th for his Spring 2007 collection show at the Altman Building on West 18th Street.
The collection was inspired partly by German constructivism and origami, which was skillfully evident in Khune’s sharp, angular shapes that finished the ends of garments. Dresses and shorts appeared as though they had unfolded from a previous form; tops featured triangular deep v-cut backs and straps arranged in patterns across the shoulders.
There were gathered pinches of fabric that created protruding pockets of material in places that one would associate with shape, like the thighs and small of the back, drawing attention to all the right places. His use of knitwear, in the long amorphous dress that ribbed at the hem and shoulders was among the collection’s strongest pieces.
Kuhne used minimal color to create the collection, which further contributed to the simplicity of the clothes, without loosing the complexity of his acclaimed off-the-cuff design.
