Verrier: Sophomore Slump
Verrier's run of the mill collection presentation on Friday, September 8th, was an unfortunate testament that even the most talented of new designers aren't spared from the sophomore show slump. In Verrier's case, it was the overdose of Swarovski crystals that weighed down an otherwise fine lineup of feminine and ladylike frocks.
The opening number, a white lace ruffle dress gathered at the waist with a crystal encrusted silk faille belt, was sweet and playful, followed by an equally appealing body-hugging white chiffon corset paired with a yellow canvas skirt and belt. The show-stealer was an apricot linen bolero that will definitely be on most women's shopping wish-list come spring.
Verrier's youthful silhouettes in cheeky soft pastels were then followed by a couple of looks that showed a bit more sophistication, such as a Nantucket red tropical wool pencil skirt on which Verrier rouched the fabric into large waffle squares.
At times, however, the collection seemed to fall apart at the hands of poor tailoring or excessive ornamentation. The backside on a pair of yellow linen pants seemed to sag on the model's lithe frame, and the beadwork on a navy sequin mini shift dress looked garish under the bright runway lights.
As relentless as the fashion world can be, Verrier's proven herself worthy of staying in the fashion radar; let's just hope that the third time's a charm.
