New York Spring '08 Preview: Angel Chang
September 05th, 2007 @ 10:18 AM - New York
What's the inspiration for your Spring collection?
Covert operations and WWII female secret agents. They were adventurous, independent, and well-educated young women - the most famous ones include Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich. They communicated in code, or had hidden messages written in their clothes.
What's new for you this season?
Maps that appear when the fabric is touched allow the wearer to navigate the city with ease. Weather-forecasting jackets help ease the surprise of sporadic climate changes these days.
Did you do any traveling this summer? Where to?
Beijing - to see an art fair. Frankfurt, Germany - to speak to a bunch of science researchers at the 4th Intl. Avantex Symposium about wearable technology. Kassel, Germany - for the opening of Documenta. Williamsburg - that's in Brooklyn. I only went there once this summer and yes, I consider that traveling.
Has the shift in the dates of this season's fashion week affected you at all? If yes, how?
I had to change my date a bunch of times, and my collaborators are booked or unavailable because of the tight schedule. It seems normal to have the dates change every season, though. I mean, when was the last time anyone was happy with the schedule?
There are only a couple more years left for shows in Bryant Park. Where in New York would you move the tents?
Practically, the Hudson River Piers 88, 90, 92 seem like a good idea....a far better venue than Bryant Park. Otherwise, I'd root for Governors Island, or some other isolated locale.
If you were a street style photographer, describe something that would catch your eye if you saw someone wearing it.
Any special ritual or routine that is helping you gear up for your show?
Riding my bike along the river in the morning. It's akin to meditating.
Paris, Nicole, Lindsay, Britney - who are you most sick of reading about in the tabloids, and which one is your guilty pleasure?
I was never a fan of Britney. But I've always liked Paris. I don't know why people hate her so much. She's accomplished so much with, what seems like, such little effort. I mean, isn't that what all those best-selling "How To Be Successful" books are trying to teach???
iPhone or Blackberry?
Blackberry. The iPhone is overhyped.
And finally, how will you spend Labor Day weekend?
Daydreaming about a vacation...
Angel Chang presents her collection on Friday, September 7th from 2-4pm at A.I.R. Gallery, 511 West 25th Street, Suite 301.
