CFDA 2013 Nominees and Award Winners Announced
Simone Goller
March 14th, 2013 @ 09:52 AM - New York
The Council of Fashion Designers of America held an intimate reception at their sleek new downtown office on March 13, to announce the nominees for the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards. By hosting the event this year, the CFDA proved they are just as involved in advancing the organization’s goals and American fashion as they ever were, since their divisive move from the garment district. “This morning we had our board meeting and it actually went very well,” said Diane von Furstenberg, president of the CFDA, before announcing award recipients.
Vera Wang will be receiving the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award. The international award, the only non-American designer award chosen each year, will be given to Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy. Oscar de la Renta, past CFDA president, will be accepting the Founders award for his “contributions to the CFDA, to American fashion, and to the Costume Institute at the Met” said von Furstenberg.
The awards have been underwritten by Swarovski for 12 years. Nadja Swarovski announced the nominees for the Swarovski awards for emerging talent in men’s wear as Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Oswald of Public School, Todd Snyder and Tom Coppens. This year’s emerging women’s wear talent nominees are all duos, including Carlie Cushnie and Michelle Ochs of Cushnie et Ochs, Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis of Suno, and Shane Gabier and Christopher Peter of Creatures of the Wind. Emerging talents in accessory design category are Irene Neuwirth, Pamela Love and Jennifer Meyer.
Considered the highest accolades awarded by the fashion industry and by peers thereof, simply receiving such prestigious recognition by the biggest names in the industry is laudable. Women’s wear designer nominees are Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, and Jack McCoullough & Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler. Thom Browne, Michael Bastian and Steven Cox and Daniel Silver of Duckie Brown made up the men’s wear designer nominees while accessory designers nominated are the ‘Proenza boys’ and Phillip Lim.
Winners will be announced at the CFDA awards ceremony on June 3 at Lincoln Center, based on final voting ballots tallied in May.
