Doo.Ri’s Draped Designs
Simone Goller
February 12th, 2011 @ 00:57 AM - New York
Designer Doo-Ri Chung has already developed a niche for herself in the sartorial realm, and with her consistent use of jersey, draping and the stony color gray, nothing less was presented at her fall 2011 show on Friday, Feb. 11, in New York.
At an art gallery in Chelsea, Doo.Ri made an audience burst with anticipation until she sent out her elongated and fluid silhouettes for the season. Opening with less than a handful of beige looks, the color scheme quickly shifted into monochrome-zone where oversized, chunky layers of charcoal, gray and midnight made it tricky to decipher between outerwear and ready-to-wear. While loosely cut ill-fitting pants only added to the voluminous blur, the centered piping and thick black cuffs proved a note-worthy success in bringing the eye to focus.
Not all elements were has-beens for Doo.Ri and when these “city nomads,” as she referred to them in her notes with sketches, came strutting out in fresh, racy cutout dresses, everyone’s attention peaked.
Drawing inspiration from the work of artist Beverly Semmes, Doo.Ri played on linear structure and movement with elongated proportions, giving her own edgy twist to the designs.
True art and novelty this season was where she noticeably pushed herself, with clever embellishments in detailed macrame embroidery and satin piping, and with her newly seen top heavy volume with wool, mohair and cashmere knits. With her steady skill set, it was a pleasure to see her tread some new water.
