Cynthia Rowley Resort: Street Style
Renata Espinosa
June 16th, 2010 @ 10:15 AM - New York
Cynthia Rowley took her Resort 2011 collection to the streets for a mobile presentation in three midtown Manhattan locations on Tuesday, June 15, that bystanders on the sidewalk witnessed as well as the editors whose offices were at the site of the pit stop, including Time Life, Hearst and Conde Nast.
With a glossy black bus as their dressing room, the sidewalk as their runway and a taped-up black backdrop ready for photographing their close-ups, nine models rotated 18 looks from Rowley’s urban sophisticate-on-seaside-holiday collection. And just as with showroom appointments attended by editors, waiters passed around trays of water and orange juice in champagne flutes.
Denim and chiffon patchwork tunics and dresses mixed with sequined pullovers, bold geometric prints and bright metallic fabrics used in plaid maxi-length skirts, layered petal mini skirts and a shift dress with a cut-out back. The shoes were especially fetching, with floral or denim fabric patchwork overlaid over chunky heeled platforms worn with socks with paillette-covered . A slouchy nautical print cardigan twin set and large gold lobster necklace hinted at a maritime theme.
“It’s almost beachy, but maybe not,” said Rowley. “It may be a little pretentious to assume that people are buying their wardrobe to go to a resort.”
Rowley’s resort show on-the-go is not the only way she’s going mobile these days. She’s also outfitted a “shop on wheels,” which she debuted at Art Basel last year, complete with rack of clothes and fitting rooms. Currently parked in Scottsdale, Ariz., the bus has made stops in Richmond, Atlanta, Austin, Dallas and Houston thus far.
