Michael Kors' Feel-Good Hit

Renata Espinosa
February 18th, 2010 @ 11:03 AM - New York

Even if Michael Kors is hanging out in the backwoods of some small mountain town, he can be counted on to make it feel like the most deluxe hillside retreat with jaw-dropping panoramic views. You might be surrounded by nature on all sides, but it’s kept at a safe distance thanks to layers of cashmere, mohair and of course, lots of fur.

For Michael Kors’ fall 2010 show, held in New York on Wednesday, Feb. 17, he gave city dwellers permission to let loose, head to the country and unpack that coat you’ve been storing in a vacuum sealed pouch at the bottom of your closet. You can also leave the wrinkles intact, as Kors did, in his re-working of classic Chesterfield coats in crushed cashmere. It’s all about undone glamour.

When living in a world that seems on the verge of falling apart, some designers turn to sparkly things to get people’s mind of the gloom, while others, like Kors, suggest swathing yourself in something comfortable and cozy, like a giant cowl neck sweater or hooded fur anorak. Kors even sent out a version of the ultimate couch potato must-have, a pair of cashmere sweatpants.

Kors’ cacophony of lush textures, from coyote to fox fur, mohair, cashmere and even lurex, helped mix up what one would usually associate with city and country dressing. Here, evening wear for a museum cocktail party meant a long, narrow knit column dress or a black paillette jersey gown sliced at the waist so that the top hung loose like an untucked tank. This was “urban casual.” But what to wear when you’re shoveling snow at the country house? How about a fox fur-lined nylon utility jacket? Country luxe.

Kors, one of American sportswear’s finest practitioners, hit the mark with a collection that understood what really sends people out to shop - to feel better.
