Versace Unites Clans, Chiffon and Sequins
Godfrey Deeny
March 02nd, 2009 @ 3:20 PM - Milan
Leave it to the house of Versace to unite the two halves of Milan – meaning sworn enemies AC Milan and Internazionale soccer teams – the New York Yankees and New York Mets of the Italian fashion capital.
After a snappy chiffon and sequins moment on the catwalk of the house’s custom-built show space Monday, March 2, Donatella Versace greeted the president of AC Milan, Adriano Galliani, backstage before posing for photos with Xavier Zanetti, the captain of Internazionale.
“We met on a plane and I told her how I always wanted to come to one of her shows,” Galliani explained. Since AC is financed by Italian premier and billionaire businessman Silvio Berlusconi, Galliani is one of the most powerful buyers of soccer players on the planet.
Diplomatically entering as Galliani exited, Zanetti, a hard charging midfielder, embraced Donatella, whose family are hard core Interisti, as they call the fans of Internazionale in Milan.
“I loved the clothes, exciting and sexy,” said Zanetti, a veteran Argentine star.
Out on the runway, Donatella stuck close to the house’s distinguishing characteristics of drop-dead glamour, injected with a new element of smart fabric research.
“Did you like all my metal?” Versace wondered referring to great flared coats and Spencer jackets in mohair that came streaked in steel thread.
Her standout ideas were some sensational sequined cocktail dresses, whose swirling designs replicated snakeskin patterns. Their backs were cut open suggestively low, so when it gets chilly this coming fall, the designer offered stellar shaved mink coats in colors like turquoise and bone.
In a healthy moment for Versace, the house also launched a Versus capsule collection of accessories, shown this weekend. Designed by Britain’s hottest young designer Christopher Kane, the Gladiator heels and metallic mini clutches won raves from the audience.
The Versace show ended the six-day Milan season, which was all about houses being true to their respective roots, while also creating rich new materials, fabrics and finishes in a season where designers were determined to present themselves as hard working.
In the sense that Versace has spent the past few seasons sticking close to its high-octane tradition, the house seemed ahead of the curve.
