Adam Lippes Brings American Sportswear to Mango

Designer Adam Lippes’ fresh take on American sportswear for men and women is about to hit Spanish retailer Mango and its menswear counterpart He, the clothing store most recently associated with Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz and her sister Monica Cruz, who designed a collection for the chain.

This is Lippes’ first collaboration with a mass retail store like Mango, which has nearly 1300 stores internationally. The Adam Lippes collection for Mango will be carried in 600 of them, as well as online, and there are plans to roll out three more seasonal collections through next year

“I was really impressed by them,” said Lippes on his decision to work with Mango. “They’re not about copying other designers; they have their own point of view.”

Retailing at wallet-friendly prices of $39-$249, Lippes designed 12 pieces each for women and men for spring, from charming polka-dot printed dresses to effortless caftan-like tunics that call to mind Halston for women to a sporty lightweight gray shorts suit, easy cotton pants and preppy striped sweaters for men.

The collection features more evening pieces than Lippes usually does, he said, but in designing the collection he wanted to make sure it was reflective of Mango’s core business of night-on-the-town attire.

Especially notable is the high quality of the fabrics - linen, cotton, wool and even cashmere - the majority of which came from Lippes' sources in Italy for his own collection, Adam by Adam Lippes. Working with Mango was easy, said Lippes, when it came to these types of details that make all the difference. “They were really supportive,” he said.

Until 2003, Lippes was the creative director at Oscar de la Renta before starting his own label. His recent Fall 2009 collection, shown in New York during fashion week, was well-received and he said there were significant increases in orders, which bodes well for Lippes, who would like to add accessories, home and children’s wear to his roster soon.
