Badgley Mischka: Dark Night

Renata Espinosa
February 18th, 2009 @ 12:18 AM - New York

Badgley Mischka’s uptown customer may have decided to go for a jaunt downtown by looks of the gothic gowns they showed on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in New York.

For day there were draped black dresses and skirts with smart little textured black jackets, accessorized with black leather kid gloves that looked both primand edgy. The use of gold velvet gave the collection its characteristically luxe feeling, and fluttery tiers of silk chiffon gave a column gown a light-as-air touch.

They didn’t fully abandon beading or bling, but used in sparingly, as in a gown with a jet black beaded bodice balanced by a tiered chiffon skirt, while shimmery fabrics had black tulle overlays to filter out a bit of the shine.

Less successful were dressed that teetered too close to Renaissance fair territory – a shiny black blouse with puffy sleeves looked a bit like something out of Zorro, for example, and the puffy sleeves found its way into another dress, this time in silver lace.

Mark Badgley and James Mischka have always been known for their elaborately embellished gowns for Hollywood red carpets, but in keeping with the times, they decided that a simpler, though still elegant, approach was more apt. Come Sunday, when the red carpet at the Oscars will be scrutinized, we’ll see if the stars, and their critics, agree with this new mood as well.
