At BCBGMaxAzria, Demure Days and Party Girl Nights
February 01st, 2008 @ 6:38 PM - New York
Designer Max Azria has a busy week in New York this fashion season, where he’s staging three shows - BCBGMaxAzria, Max Azria and the newly revived Herve Leger collection.
Azria showed the first of the three, BCBGMaxAzria, on Friday, Feb. 1, at the tents in Bryant Park. The collection appeals to a young, hip demographic and a popular choice for Hollywood starlets both up-and-coming and established.
Several celebrity fans of the label - Joss Stone, Ana Ortiz, Christina Milian and Cheryl Hines - sat front and center at the show, braving the rainy weather that plagued the first official day of New York fashion week.
For Fall 2008, the collection featured a mix between demure and modest daywear and sexy, short party dresses for night, and a contrast between floaty crepe and silk georgette and heavier wool, jersey and satin.
For day, dresses in gray jersey with delicate accordian pleating and flutter sleeves, cream silk crepe belted at the natural waist and with a tulip silhouette or silk hammered satin in steely gray referenced seventies boho elegance to great effect.
Elswewhere, wide legged pants a la Katherine Hepburn and a bamboo cotton short jacket with strong, puffed shoulders added a romantic, feminine twist to the menswear inspired looks.
Sleeveless double breasted coats in nubby textured wool looked especially chic, as did Azria’s wool trench coats with delicate contrast hand-stiching.
Less successful were his series of short, strapless party dresses with bubble hems and balloon silhouette. They already looked dated, employing a shape that has dominated many runways for the past few seasons. That said, they’re young and fun and will no doubt be a Hollywood crowd-pleaser. We could see Lindsay Lohan donning such a look at her next big premiere.
