Anna Sui's Disco Dollies

Renata Espinosa
September 11th, 2007 @ 11:28 AM - New York

Anna Sui’s typically rock ‘n roll romps on the runway got a little foxtrot flair on September 10 in her Forties-meets-Ziggy Stardust-meets-punk Spring ‘08 collection.

From the short flirty dresses in gingham taffeta with organza overlays or floral prints with flutter sleeves - ‘40s housewife dresses hacked, hemmed and repurposed - to the puffed sleeve bolero jackets in plaid with matching high-waisted trousers and plenty of sequins, short shorts and scarf prints, this was classic Sui with all the vampish, fun details she’s known for. Cute plastic platforms, some with lucite heels, others in Terry de Havilland-style multi-colored python wedge stacks, were paired with glitter bobby socks.

A high-waisted skirt with heart-shaped pockets, white piping and glittery suspenders was a fun take on a ‘70s staple, and with its flared skirt it will be figure-flattering. Though some looks, like the plaid jumpsuits and semi-sheer organza pajama pants might require more confidence to pull off - though granted, the Sui customer is of the more adventurous ilk - in this era of the dress, which is replacing pants as the wardrobe staple of choice, there were ample versions to choose from in every possible length.

Sui knows her customer appreciates looking unique and enjoys the experience of rifling through racks looking for a hidden gem that speaks perfectly to their idiosyncratic aesthetic, and they’ll love this collection for that.
