"Pirates" for the People
Renata Espinosa
January 10th, 2007 @ 2:16 PM - New York
There weren't many surprises at the 33rd Annual People's Choice Awards on CBS Tuesday, Jan. 9. Most of entertainment's heavyweights walked away with the top honors, who the public voted on via the Internet with nominees in film, music and television.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" won the audience over as their favorite movie and movie drama, while co-stars Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley's chemistry in the film made them the top choice for on-screen matchup.
Depp also took the prize for male star, though unlike other winners Tuesday night, he accepted his award via satellite.
"The fact that this award comes from the people, makes it all the more special," he said from London. "And thanks for keeping me employed, yeah? You're the boss."
Depp's words were apt in a year when Time magazine declared the person of the year to be "You." Also acknowledging the power of the people was Halle Berry, who took home the female action star award. She used her speech to encourage fans to write to executives at Fox if they want to see "X-Men 4" get produced, with her as the star.
America's sweetheart Jennifer Aniston won favorite female star, while her co-star in "The Breakup," Vince Vaughn, was picked as favorite leading man. Cameron Diaz was the favorite leading lady.
In music, Carrie Underwood was voted best female singer, and Kenny Chesney was the favorite male.
Eva Longoria and Patrick Dempsey were the top television stars honored, while Ellen DeGeneres was picked as favorite talk show host and favorite funny female star.
And who were the winners of best dressed on the red carpet? Stars like Carmen Electra and Halle Berry, who opted for strong color statements - Electra in teal and Berry in a short bronze dress - came out shining.
Overly frilly black cocktail dresses worn by Sandra Oh and Cameron Diaz may have won them points for being more edgy, but ultimately missed the point of the "little black dress" - elegance.
Another strong trend: the halter dress, which is a great look for curvy and thin figures alike, and was worn to great effect by Hayden Panettiere, Felicity Huffman and Ashley Scott.
