Celebrating Celebrity Giving at the First Annual Noble Awards
Jenny Peters
October 19th, 2009 @ 12:59 AM - Los Angeles
Despite Morgan Freeman's insistence that "I am 72 years old, so I can't remember anything any more," the venerable actor dusted off a sharp cranberry-red satin dinner jacket and arrived right on time to the First Annual Noble Awards Gala to receive his Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Los Angeles.
Honored for his long history of giving back to charities ranging from the American Red Cross to Plan!tNow, Freeman joined a slew of well-known celebrities in helping to get the nascent awards show designed to "inspire a global movement to honor the noble" off the ground. The brainchild of Janeen Mansour and Ziad Batal, the Noble Awards "celebrates worthy causes and the tireless activists and volunteers that donate their time to change the world for the better."
Not surprisingly, the night's awardees just happened to be people who have hot projects going this fall, from Teri Hatcher of "Desperate Housewives" fame, honored for her work with Childrens Hospital Los Angeles to AnnaLynne McCord of "90210" fame, who lends her time to the Blind Project. Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell of "Access Hollywood" each took home a statue, as did director Brett Ratner, who brought his grandparents to the fete.
Also called to the dais for their contributions to various charities were Laila Ali, for the Women's Sports Foundation, Joel Madden for The Art of Elysium, and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds for Stand Up to Cancer.
The awardees were matched in stature by the people that presented to them, as everyone from Lionel Richie, Benji Madden, Dennis Haysbert, James Denton, Nick Cannon, Lori Laughlin, Matt Latner, Maureen McCormack, Rodney Peete, and Rachel Nichols took to the stage to extol the charitable virtues of the stars. Brian McKnight, Julio Iglesias, Jr., Monica, Timothy Mitchum, and 8-year-old piano prodigy Emily Bear performed while actors Christopher McDonald, Alex Meneses, Ken Davitian, Nicole Richie, and Trevor Donovan cheered them on.
As former Matchbox Twenty guitarist and charity activist Adam Gaynor commented, "this event is a great reminder for everyone, famous or not, to get out and do something for someone else. How cool is that?"
